CLIMBS Content and Language Integration as a Means of Bridging Success

Presenters: Maritza Guilamo, System of Support Specialist, West 40 Intermediate Service Center No. 2 and Rona Fennessy Consultant, Rhode Island Department of Education

Content and Language Integration as a Means of Bridging Success (CLIMBS™) is a course designed to assist K-12 educators in applying the WIDA English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to scaffold instruction for the English Language Learners (ELLs) in their classrooms. The course provides an introduction to the use of a scientifically-based approach to sheltered instruction as a means of incorporating the WIDA standards into the academic content and language instruction in classrooms that include English language learners (ELLs).

School teams of ESL and general education/subject-area teachers who serve English language learners (ELLs) are invited to participate in this semester-long course. Teachers will have many opportunities to interact and to apply in the classroom what they learn about language acquisition research, Sheltered Instruction, the WIDA ELP standards and ACCESS for ELLs® test, and state content standards. They will use ELL student data, ELP and content standards, and peer observation to drive their instruction. School and district administrators are invited and encouraged to participate.

Credit: Teachers earn professional development hours for the five face-to-face workshops. They will also have the opportunity to earn graduate credit if they do action research or independent study as follow-up to the course (optional).
