English Language Arts Classroom Assessments Aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards

The assessments are coded according to standard and stage. Example: 1A.F is aligned to standard 1A, stage F (sixth grade). Sample student work, when available, follows the assessment.
A.F - Unlocking New Words
Students will teach the rest of the class about his/her assigned words.
1B.F - Award Certificate for a Character
Students will select a character from among stories they have read and create an award certificate based upon literal and inferential information, then present the criteria used in a speech.
1C.F - Cooperative Learning Groups Cooperate
Students should be placed in formal cooperative learning groups to prepare at least six questions representing the six levels of Blooms Taxonomy and work collaboratively with another group.
2A.F - Building a Literature Pyramid
Students are to build a pyramid of information about one (or more) of the literary elements by using information taken from a selection read in class.
2B.F - Building Two Literature Pyramids
Students are to use information from four selections to build two pyramids of information about the same literary element.
3A.F - If I Could Have Lived in Another Time or Culture
After brainstorming,students will produce the first draft of a multi-paragraphed composition.
3B.F - Admiring a Character
Each student will write a multi-paragraphed essay telling why he/she admires a character from literature introduced in a school-related assignment.
3C.F - Creating a Travel Brochure
Each student is to create a travel brochure designed to encourage people to visit a country/city studied in social science.
4A.F - Critiquing a Speech Contestant
Students are to view a video of a middle school student presenting an informational (impromptu) speech at the State Speech Contest, outline the content of the speech and answer questions on a work sheet about the speech.
4B.F - Participating in a Discussion Group
Each student is to demonstrate his/her group discussion skills by participating in a small group assigned to reach consensus on the year round school year issue.
5A.F - Researching Another Country's Holiday: Focusing and Gathering Information
Students are to use their research skills to find out how another country celebrates any holiday similar to one celebrated in the United States.
5B.F - Researching Another Country's Holiday: Organizing and Recording Information
While researching their chosen topic, students are to use prescribed formats and procedures to evaluate, record and give credit to sources of information.
5C.F - Researching and Writing About Another Country's Holiday: Documenting and Communicating Information
As a culmination to the research activities done for 5A.F and 5B.F, each student will write a multi-paragraphed expository paper.
