Students who meet this standard can understand oral communication in the target language.
- Show an awareness of differences between formal and informal forms of address.
- Recognize gender and number.
- Hear differences between questions and statements.
- Respond to simple commands (e.g., stand up, sit down).

Students who meet this standard can interact in the target language in various settings.
- Ask basic memorized questions.
- Respond with memorized answers to questions that use familiar language.
- Repeat routine courtesy expressions accurately.
- Repeat formal and informal words of address.
- Imitate sounds and words with age- and stage-appropriate pronunciation.
28C —
Students who meet this standard can understand written passages in the target language.
- Identify the written form of familiar spoken language (e.g., simple greetings, basic vocabulary).
28D —
Students who meet this standard can use the target language to present information, concepts and ideas for a variety of purposes to different audiences.
- Copy words and phrases in the target language.
- Categorize words based on meaning.
- Label familiar items (e.g., family members, classroom objects, pets).
29A —
Students who meet this standard can understand manners and customs of various target language societies.
- Recite common forms of courtesy (e.g., please, thank you), greetings (e.g., hello, happy birthday, congratulations), and leave-takings (e.g., goodbye, see you soon) appropriate to the time of day.
- Recognize correct forms of courtesy in relation to another person (e.g., sir, ma'am, miss).
29B —
Students who meet this standard can understand music, dance, folk art, visual art, drama, and architecture related to the target language societies.
- Identify an art form related to the target language country(ies) or culture from which it originates.
- Sing or dramatize a song in the target language.
29C —
Students who meet this standard can understand literature and various media of target language societies.
- Recognize the main character, settings, and events from selected samples of culturally authentic children's literature with an audio/visual cue.
- Identify the type of primary media (e.g., television, radio, book, newspaper, computer, CD-Rom, mouse) when given an example in the target language.
29D —
Students who meet this standard can understand history of areas where the target language is spoken.
- Recognize some important people and events in the history of areas where the target language is spoken.
29E —
Students who meet this standard can understand geography of various target language societies.
- Identify areas where the target language is spoken.
- Recognize simple geography terms in the target language.
30A —
Students who meet this standard can use the target language to reinforce and further knowledge of other disciplines.
- Recognize the currency of a country where the target language is spoken.
- Use simple math vocabulary (e.g., name numbers and simple geometric shapes).
- Name simple science terms referring to weather and nature.
- React to directions given in the target language while participating in a physical activity (e.g., "Simon says.").
30B —
Students who meet this standard can use the target language to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a variety of career options.
- Associate common professions and occupations with visual or auditory cues.
- Identify some well-known people whose native language is not English.
