The
Illinois
State
Board
of
Education
is
going
on
the
road
for
a
second
round
of
local
Schoolhouse
Meetings
this
fall.
State
Superintendent
of
Education
Glenn
W.
McGee
will
visit
16
schools
statewide
in
September
and
October
to
hear
comments
and
suggestions
directly
from
local
residents.
McGee
plans
a
third
round
of
visits
next
spring
that
will
complete
his
tour
of
“listening
sessions”
in
all
45
of
the
state’s
Educational
Service
Regions.
In
June,
the
Board
held
12
meetings
and
listened
to
ways
the
state
can
better
support
schools
and
students.
The
ideas
and
suggestions
shared
at
the
first
meetings
by
parents,
students,
teachers,
school
board
members,
administrators,
and
business
and
community
leaders
are
helping
the
State
Board
respond
more
effectively
to
schools
and
students.
The
Schoolhouse
Meetings
are
one
component
of
McGee’s
plan
to
improve
and
strengthen
ISBE’s
delivery
of
services.
“Visiting
communities
across
the
state
has
allowed
me
to
hear
from
local
citizens
about
the
local
needs
of
schools
and
how
we
can
best
support
them,”
McGee
said.
“And
the
listening
will
continue,
not
just
at
meetings
but
by
all
parts
of
the
agency.
This
input
is
vital
to
help
the
State
Board
provide
first-class
service
as
we
work
together
to
make
Illinois
schools
Second
to
None.”
The
two-hour
meetings
will
start
with
a
panel
presentation
on
the
Illinois
Learning
Standards.
The
overview
will
outline
the
skills
and
knowledge
encompassed
in
the
Standards,
why
they
are
important
to
students
at
all
grade
levels,
and
how
achieving
the
Standards
helps
students
succeed
in
life.
In
addition,
representatives
of
the
Illinois
PTA
will
be
on
hand
to
talk
about
what
the
Standards
mean
to
parents.
But
the
bulk
of
the
Schoolhouse
meeting
will
be
devoted
to
questions
and
comments
from
the
audience.
McGee
stressed that everyone in the community is invited and urged to attend and give
input. He encourages superintendents
to bring a “team” of representatives from their districts and communities. Registration
is free and easy online at www.isbe.state.il.us/schoolhouse or at the door.
Everyone is welcome. Those who cannot attend may e-mail ideas and suggestions
to ISBE at schoolhouse@isbe.net.
