| Springfield – Twenty-seven
Illinois educational institutions will receive a total of
$2 million in Scientific Literacy Grants for the 2001–2002 school year as part of a competitive grant application process through the Illinois State Board of Education.
“These grants will help schools focus on improving students’ science, technology and mathematical skills by enhancing curriculum and classroom teaching through new resources,” said State Superintendent Glenn W. McGee. “This new funding source also will help move students closer to meeting the Illinois Learning Standards for these subjects.”
A total of 156 institutions applied for the grant proposals, which will provide funding for staff development for public elementary and secondary teachers and pilot projects in these subject areas.
Staff development initiatives received $1,656,136 to fund projects that promote research-based best practices in teaching for elementary and secondary educators in the science, mathematics and technology fields. These projects will help increase the knowledge and skills of teachers, improve instructional practices and the attitudes and behaviors of teachers in these fields.
Pilot projects received $425,950 for experimenting with new systems of teaching and learning that have a strong research design and aim toward permanent improvements in the classroom. Each project should include direct K-12 student participation and incorporate elements of the Learning Standards
