Chicago Native is new Manager with State Board of Education
The
Illinois State Board of Education’s new manager of the
Specialized Support division is a Chicago native who brings
over 20 years of experience in local schools, higher education
institutions, and federal agencies.
“This
is a very important leadership position in the agency,”
said State Superintendent of Education Respicio Vazquez. “We
conducted a wide search to find the best person to provide
leadership in this key area, and I am pleased that we were
able to convince Dr. Anthony Sims to bring his skills and
expertise to this task.”
Sims
will join the agency April 22. He is currently a Visiting
Associate Professor in the Special Education Department of
the College of Education at the University of South Florida
in Tampa. Previously, he was Public Health Advisor in the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.
Sims’
career includes more than ten years working in the areas of
mental health and special education in Montgomery County,
Maryland, most recently as a Behavior and Evaluation Specialist
for the Montgomery County Schools. He has led or conducted
numerous research studies on education policy issues, including
special education and school-to-work.
Several
state and federal agencies, universities and education organizations
have utilized his services as a consultant on education and
public health issues. He has also conducted many workshops
and conference presentations on educational issues, including
special education, school culture, discipline and behavior
intervention, and school/community collaboration. He earned
his bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees from Howard
University in Washington, DC.
Sims
holds a School Psychologist certificate and is a National
Certified Counselor. He will join the agency April 22.
Special
Services includes the agency work units on Special Education
Services, Special Education Compliance, English Language Learning
and New Learning Opportunities.
