The State
Board of Education acted today to extend the contract of State Superintendent
Respicio F. Vazquez while the search continues for the next State Superintendent
of Education.
The maximum
length of Vazquez's contract was extended to "no later than June
30, 2003" with the provision that it will terminate with seven
days notice if the Board hires someone else as State Superintendent
of Education prior to June 30, 2003. Vazquez's previous contract covered
the period from February 1 thru June 30, 2002.
The Board
is conducting a search for a State Superintendent of Education and
has narrowed the field with the assistance of a search firm and by
reviewing applications/nominations and conducting several interviews.
The Board's intention is to select a new superintendent this summer.
