State Board of Education approves increase in GED fee

The State Board of Education today approved a $5 increase in the GED application fee, raising from $30 to $35 the cost of taking the test to earn a high school equivalency certificate.

State Superintendent Robert Schiller said this increase will provide the additional revenue needed to administer the GED Testing Program without imposing an extraordinary burden on the test takers. The application fee increase will be effective as of January 1, 2003. Retest fees will remain the same.

The GED Testing Program remains a low-cost high school completion program and provides tremendous value for individuals who seek to earn an Illinois High School Equivalency Certificate. A recent review of the rate structure indicates that the Illinois GED application and retest fees are among the lowest in the nation.

On January 1, 2002, the GED application fee increased from $25 to $30 to cover rising administrative costs associated with the release of the 2002 series of GED tests.
