Teacher Delora Taylor Washington awarded $25,000 from
Milken Family Foundation
A Corliss High School teacher was awarded $25,000 today
(Monday, Oct. 24) from the Milken Family Foundation in
recognition of her outstanding efforts in the field of
education.
To simply say that Delora Taylor Washington teaches math
is a serious understatement.
She has an innate ability to recognize exactly what her
student's need whether it's more challenging work or extra
help. Delora doesn't wait for students to come to her
she is always one step ahead of them when it comes to
helping them become successful learners.
It is this dedication to her students that led the Corliss
High School teacher to be selected as one of three Illinois
teachers to receive the Milken National Educator award.
The award is given annually to teachers demonstrating
exemplary teaching skills and personal commitment to education.
Washington's teaching talents are so outstanding that
students who don't have her as a teacher frequently choose
to sit in on one of her tutoring sessions because of the
way she explains things. She will hold these sessions
before school, after school, on her lunch break, whenever
her students need her she is there.
Colleagues also look to her for ideas and teaching strategies.
She's the math department chair and as such she challenges
staff members to work at higher levels. Washington believes
that collaboration is the key to a successful department
and working together for the common goal of improving
learning reinforces the belief that helping students is
the number one priority. Delora leads by example and she
has a positive impact on everyone she works with. As one
of her fellow teachers said, "Delora consistently
goes above and beyond to help students and staff. Whatever
she says she will do, she does. Everyone knows they can
count on Ms. Washington."
Washington now becomes one of 99 Illinois teachers and
principals who have received the Milken National Educator
Award. The prestigious award not only brings national
recognition but each winner receives $25,000 from the
Milken Family Foundation which they can use for any purpose.
This year, 100 teachers in 48 states and the District
of Columbia will receive Milken awards. To date, the Foundation
has honored a total of more than 2100 educators, and distributed
more than $54 million in awards.
