Illinois State Board of Education releases preliminary
2005 statewide testing data
Data includes analysis of preliminary results and
list of schools and districts in Improvement Status
Springfield, Ill. -Test scores in numerous areas went
up in 2005 statewide student testing, according to preliminary
results released today by the Illinois State Board of
Education (ISBE). An initial analysis shows good ongoing
progress in several areas with continued need for improvement
to narrow the achievement gap between student groups.
Analysis of the preliminary ISAT results shows improvements
including:
- third grade student Reading scores increased or held
steady across all student groups;
- fourth grade students showed marked gains in Science
across all student groups;
- fifth grade Math scores were up across all student
groups; and
- eighth grade Reading scores increased significantly
over all student groups.
Analysis of the preliminary PSAE results showed significant
gains in Reading among Hispanic, Black and Low Income
students.
The Statewide Testing Review Committee has recommended
implementing long-term trend studies to be sure that ISBE
has the information it needs to set priorities and assist
schools in continuing improvement for all students across
the state.
The most recent tests were given in March and April.
Students in third, fifth and eighth grades took the Illinois
Standards Achievement Test in reading and mathematics
while students in fourth and seventh grades were tested
in science. Students in 11th grade take the Prairie State
Achievement Exam (PSAE), which tests students in math,
reading and science.
The Illinois Measure of Annual Growth in English (IMAGE)
measures the progress of students with limited English
proficiency in reading and mathematics.
The Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) is designed for
students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP)
for whom all other state assessments are inappropriate
because of their disabilities.
In addition to the preliminary statewide testing results
ISBE has provided a listing of the Illinois schools and
Illinois districts that are in Improvement Status under
the requirements of the Federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
Act. Beginning in July, ISBE notified each of these schools
of the action steps required under the Federal law and
provided assistance to the schools in drafting parent
notification letters.
The total number of students tested by test and by grade
level was:
- Grade 3 ISAT = 138,250
- Grade 4 ISAT = 144,746
- Grade 5 ISAT = 149,397
- Grade 7 ISAT = 155,825
