State Board Celebrates Academic Improvement at Harvard Elementary in Chicago Public Schools 299
Annual list recognizes 94 improving and high-performing Chicago schools
CHICAGO —State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch recognized Harvard Elementary in Chicago Public Schools District 299 today for being named to the 2011 Illinois Honor Roll. Harvard Elementary is among 94 schools in CPS named to the 2011 Illinois Honor Roll and recognized Monday during a morning school assembly at Harvard.
“Harvard Elementary demonstrates that exemplary progress is possible at every level and can be sustained,” said State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch. “We commend Harvard Elementary for achieving this award five times and the faculty and community in the other CPS Honor Roll schools for their hard work and dedication on behalf of students each day.”
The 2011 Illinois Honor Roll recognizes 703 schools across the state for their continued academic progress. The honor roll is divided into three categories – Spotlight Schools, Academic Excellence and Academic Improvement. Each award has unique criteria that best reflect the diverse circumstances of Illinois schools.
- Spotlight Schools – Recognizes 167 high-poverty, high-performing schools that are beating the odds to overcome the achievement gap.
- Academic Excellence Awards – 438 schools have sustained high performance over at least three years.
- Academic Improvement Awards – 114 schools are showing substantial improvement.
Harvard is one of three schools in the state, along with Cather and Beidler Elementary, also in CPS, to receive the Academic Improvement Award for the fifth time.
Additionally, Jones College Preparatory School in Chicago has made the Honor Roll more than any school in the state with 16 awards since the Honor Roll began in 2003. It is one of 10 schools in the state, along with Lane Technical High School and Vanderpoel Elementary Magnet School, to win the Spotlight and Academic Excellence Award in 2011. Six Schools statewide, including Black Magnet Elementary and Columbus Elementary in Chicago, won both the Spotlight and Academic Improvement Awards in 2011.
