Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
States Lead the Effort to Write New Science Standards
Illinois is among the 26 lead states that have worked collaboratively to update science standards, called Next Generation Science Standards, under the guidance of Achieve, Inc.
These internationally-benchmarked standards provide a new vision for K-12 science and engineering education and set the stage for a significant shift in how those subjects may be viewed and taught in Illinois and across the nation.

Second Draft of the Next Generation Science Standards Expected to be Released to the Public in January, 2013!
The 2nd draft of the Next Generation Science Standards will be ready for its public review sometime in January, 2013. The draft science standards can be found at http://www.nextgenscience.org/. Your feedback is welcomed and encouraged.
The science standards are based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education, released by the National Research Council (NRC) in July, 2011. Those interested in the NGSS are encouraged to read the Framework for K-12 Science Education., released last summer by the National Research Council. To download the Framework document as a PDF, free registration is required on the NRC Site: http://www7.nationalacademies.org/bose/Standards_Framework_Homepage.html
A final draft of the standards is expected to be released in March, 2013 and we anticipate the Illinois State Board of Education will consider its final version of these new science standards in 2013.
The Illinois State Board of Education, in partnership with The Illinois Science Teachers Association, will be sharing information and updates regarding the standards to all stakeholders in Illinois. A series of educator workshops on the standards are planned and information, including locations and dates, will be announced on the ISBE and ISTA websites: http://www.isbe.net/ngss/ and http://www.ista-il.org/.
